As with most things like life, it’s always good to have a backup. Whether that is a backup plan of some sort or having backups of documents for your own personal records, multiple copies and or versions of a plan are always wise. In fact, backup capability is one of the bigger reasons why we prefer QuickBooks Desktop over QuickBooks Online. Currently, QuickBooks Online doesn’t back up people’s records. In fact, we’ve had to completely redo clients bookkeeping a time or two because something happened to their online file and they lost vital information.

That sounds pretty daunting doesn’t it? We certainly think so. In fact, we like to have backups for our backups; so for the online version to not have any backup capabilities, we get a bit worried. However, thanks to a nice chat with the people at QuickBooks, we’ve recent discovered two services that exist for people to be able to back up their QuickBooks online records.

Meet Skyvia. This is a service you can sign up for free and use to get those much wanted extra copies of records. It’s a service provided by Devart, a company with nineteen years of experience in database connectivity solutions.  Skyvia offers integration, replicate QuickBooks data, backup, and data management specific to QuickBooks. They have four different packages available, depending on your needs.

Depending on the size of your business and the amount of activity within your QuickBooks Online file, you can decide which package would work best for you! If you’d like to, head over to their website, and check out the nitty gritty details to see if this is a service you’d like to try!

The other option out there is SafetyNet. This service works a little differently than Skyvia, but also works to back up your QuickBooks records. SafetyNet works by using QuickBooks Online API in order to fetch all the data in your account and creates backups of them. It is a cloud based software service founded in 2011 by Jobber, a Canadian company.

SafetyNet archives are stored in the United States and allows for unlimited archives, unlimited restores, unlimited history and a visual history viewer. The following features are what SafetyNet offers:

  • Create snapshots of QuickBooks online
  • No sign in required – simply use your Intuit credentials to sign in
  • Archive snapshots
  • Data secure and encrypted

For now, SafetyNet is a free service while it is in beta phase. What does that mean? Basically it means that they are testing out their backup services and see how it does amongst people. Once their beta phase is over, there will be various pricing plans similar to Skyvia. Please keep in mind if you try out this service while it is in beta phase, the free ride won’t last, at some point there will be a fee charged. SafetyNet is still working on their pricing list, but feel free to scope out their website for more information!

We, here at AOB, have not personally tried out these services. However, finding out that there are ways to back up your online files, we thought was pertinent for clients’ knowledge. We’d love to hear from our clients if they give either service a trial and get their feedback for future reference. We like to help our clients as best we can and keep everything cost effective!
